I have two macs that were given to me, one from work and one from a friend. One is a 20 inch imac (2 ghz,1G,250GB) the other a mac book pro(mid 2009). I have no OS on either of them . I have tried the internet recovery sequence Command, Opt R for both but can't seem to get that to work. I can get in to the recovery mode but whenever I try the reinstall option I get the error 'This item is temporarily unavailable'.
I assume the real error is 'you have not purchased the OS so your computers are useless to you'.
Is there anything I can do to get an OS installed on these machines or is it off to the dump?
Thanks
Here is how to reset OX X Capitan to Factory settings your Mac (MacBook Pro, Retina, Air, iMac, Mac Pro & Mac Mini).
I have an older, MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) that I intend to give as a gift.
- Once you’ve done that, here’s how to install, reinstall, or upgrade to El Capitan, step by step: Boot from your Recovery HD partition by restarting your Mac while holding down the Command+R keys. The OS X Utilities window appears. Select Reinstall OS X, and click Continue. The OS X El Capitan splash screen appears.
- If your Mac is a 2011 or later you can use Internet Recovery (command-option-r) to erase the hard drive and reinstall the original OS then upgrade to High Sierra from there. If you insist on using El Capitan you will need to sign into the App Store on a Mac that cannot run High Sierra and download EL Cap, then make a bootable usb installer to use on your MBP.
For security reasons, I decided that I was a good to format the drive and reinstall OS X El Capitan.
This Item Is Temporarily Unavailable El Capitan Reinstall Download
My first effort was thwarted by an error:
This item is temporarily unavailable.Try again later.
After reading Wiped drive, now can’t reinstall El Capitan from Recovery because the “item is temporarily unavailable”, I supplied a different set of icloud credentials, and the process continued.
Eventually, however, the installation failed with a different message:
No packages were eligible for install. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance. Quit the installed to restart your computer and try again.

I tried using 'Internet Recovery' (Option+Command+R) and a bootable USB drive that contained El Capitan, both of which ultimately failed with the same message.
Is there a way to get this to work?
To create a bootable USB drive, I needed the Install OS X El Capitan.app package.
Trying To Reinstall Os X El Capitan This Item Is Temporarily Unavailable
Using my MBP 16', I used the Download OS X El Capitan link on Apple's support site to get the installer.
Unfortunately, running the InstallMacOSX.pkg
package in the DMG failed:
This version of OS X 10.11 cannot be installed on this computer.

I 'found' a Install OS X El Capitan.app package and was able to create the bootable media.
